In my very first semester at OSU, it has been my pleasure to get to work with the Men on Boats team and be a part of this story. As dramaturg, my job is to research the history behind the play and the events surrounding it, and I can say with certainty that I never could have imagined the layers behind the John Wesley Powell expedition. The deeper I dug, I was surprised at how many people that time has forgotten and how easy it is to forget that a person in history once lived and breathed and mattered.
Through this page, you can explore a little of the history of the show and its playwright. You can see historic photos of the real places that are mentioned in the script. You can read quotes from Powell's journal about the men and the raging rivers. You can read interviews with our director, scenic designer, and cast, and even leave them a note! Just like the 1869 expedition, there are many people in our cast and crew that have worked tirelessly to bring this journey to its end. Many of them do it humbly and with the joy of being part of an ensemble, creating something bigger than themselves. You now have a chance to become part of this history by joining us here tonight. Thank you supporting us! We hope you enjoy the show. -Sarah Cole, Dramaturg |
